August is the national “Nuclear Free Future Month,” and this year is the 66th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the San Francisco Bay a broad coalition of groups organized two events known as From Hiroshima to Fukushima to Livermore: Confronting the Two-Headed Dragon of Nuclear Weapons and Nuclear Power. These were held at the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Weapons Laboratory, one of the two principle U.S. facilities engaged in nuclear weapons research and development.

Dr. Arjun Makhijani, President of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, is the principal author of the first study ever done on energy conservation potential in the U.S. economy. He is co-author Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy, the first analysis of a transition to a U.S. economy based completely on renewable energy, without any use of fossil fuels or nuclear power. MT Silvia's mother, Pauline Silvia, was a US Navy biologist conducting research on the effects of radiation on mice and dogs from 1952 to 1956. Other branches of the military conducted their own research too; even as they entertained Las Vegas tourists they exposed military personnel and those down-wind of the Nevada blast zones to radiation.
Back then MT Silvia was a peace- and anti-nuclear activist. Today she is producer and director of the award-winning documentary, Atomic Mom (http://atomicmom.org/) exploring the past with her mother who had never before talked about her work. Atomic Mom includes interviews with Hibakasha and doctors, engineers, and others and shares footage of bombed-destroyed Hiroshima, atom-bomb pop culture and "novelty music", and other crazy propaganda of the time.
This wide-ranging interview with MT Silvia highlights the sobering reality that still threatens our world.

Fifty years ago this month, six people began a 30-day jail sentence for sitting down at the Patterson drugstore lunch counter in Lynchberg, Virginia.
On December 14, 1960, four white and two African American college students— entered the segregated drugstore hoping to convince the owner to let them have coffee together.
The result—the city’s first sit-in—landed the college students in jail, and ignited a firestorm of controversy throughout the city. It also brought the civil rights movement to a head.
We talk with Mary Edith Bentley Abu Saba, one of the Patterson Six.

The Local Community Radio Act allows low-power, neighborhood-based stations to broadcast in urban areas for the first time.
It also marks both the first major legislative success for the growing movement for a more democratic media system in the U.S. and power shifting to grassroots groups and media advocates. Moreover, it invites policymakers to join forces to overcome corporate opposition to media diversity.

Over the next 5 years the United States Navy plans to increase the number of its military exercises or expand the areas in which they may occur, and virtually every US coastal state will be affected.
Some of these exercises may occur in the nation's most biologically sensitive marine habitats, including National Marine Sanctuaries and breeding habitat for the endangered North Atlantic right whale. The Navy anticipates more than 2.3 million takes per year or 11.7 million over 5 years. A "take" is a significant disruption in marine mammal foraging, breeding, and other essential behaviors.
Rosaline Peterson, California President and Co-Founder of the Agriculture Defense Coalition (ADC) talks about the impact of these tests.

Show Summary:
There is a growing water crisis in Palestine that affects agriculture, industry, and the health of virtually every adult and child.

The sole source of fresh water for the Gaza Strip is the Coastal Aquifer, a water source shared with Israel. This aquifer has been contaminated for years and it is deteriorating even further. Poor sanitation and over-extraction have polluted this limited water supply.

Today we take a look at the water crisis in the region with Ziad Abbas, a Palestinian refugee from Dheisheh Refugee camp in the West Bank and current associate director of Middle East Children's Alliance.

On April 8 the World Bank will vote on loaning South African energy parastatal Eskom $3.75 billion to build what will be the fourth largest coal burning power plant in the world. This 4,800 MW Medupi power plant will add an estimated 25 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year to Eskom’s 40 percent share of South Africa’s overall total greenhouse gas emissions.
We talk to environmental activist Sunita Dubey about this loan and the growing world-wide opposition to it. And we hear what Eskom and bank officials are not saying: that there is no such thing as clean coal. If fact, from China to South Africa – where coal seams continue to burn in the ground long after mines have shut down – to India, where a major coal company will present investors an IPO later this year, coal mining and burning devastates land, communities, and people the world over.

In the Palestinian villages of Qarawat Bani Zayid, Kufr 'Ayn, Beit Rima, Deir Ghasane, and Nabi Salah the taps have been running dry - no water for drinking, for washing, for livestock or agriculture. Many Palestinians in this area have not had water from their taps since March 15.

We talk with Susan Kopelman of Life Source, a Palestinian-led collective that works specifically on the issues associated with water in Israel and Palestine.

Rachel Corrie refused to move out of the path of the bulldozer and was run over and crushed to death.

On January 20, 2009 seventy people came to Washington DC with a message for the 111th Congress: End the war. End the Killing. They were referring to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and US sanctioned bombings of Gaza. The group marched in a solemn procession which ended in the atrium of the Hart Senate Building, where they respectfully spoke the names of those who had perished prematurely and unnecessarily.

Police disrupted this Constitutionally protected speech on the grounds of illegal assemble and disorderly conduct.

The court case was dismissed on June 22. On the phone are three activists Pete Perry, Michelle Grise, and Robert Diesu who were in the courtroom.

His promoted the idea of a brokerage firm being the financial "wing" of the next great social movement and his vision included the day when environmental and economic justice takes precedence over corporate greed.

Operation First Casualty simulated war in Union Square in San Francisco on Black Friday. Members of Iraq Veterans Against War, burst into a cafe on the Square and arrested a number of patrons and forced them to kneel while bags were pulled over their heads. The soldiers effectively exhibited the sort of aggression that was demanded of them in Iraq. Listen to a variety of voices attending the action, including casual passers by, a counseling therapist, and the troops themselves.

Troy Davis's capital case goes to an Appeals Court on December 9. We're gratified to air the voice of Martina Correia, Troy Davis's sister and staunch supporter.

And Gloria Johnson is the mother of Montell Johnson who is in currently in Sheridan Correctional Center in Illinois suffering from chronic progressive multiple sclerosis, dementia and medical neglect. Montell also suffers from stage 4 bed sores, a blood infection, and Hepatitis C contracted when he had some teeth extracted which are not directly related to chronic progressive multiple sclerosis. He will not live for much longer but the California and Illinois courts are having trouble releasing him to his mother's care so he can die at home in dignity.
